Don't Succumb to Certification Fever

Dear Molly: I was recently informed that with A+ and Net+ certifications I would be able to get a job with Minolta, which is definitely the direction I want to go in. I do not have the money or the time to go back to school, however, and everything I have looked at involves just that--anywhere from six month to a year in school and several thousand in tuition. Is there anything available that would allow me to obtain those two certifications in a shorter amount of time and cost significantly less? Please let me know.

Molly says: Depending upon how much spare time you have to devote to studying, you could complete the study requirements in a few months using books and CD-ROM study materials. The total cost of the materials would be a few hundred dollars; the costs of the tests likewise would be in the hundreds--not thousands--of dollars.

Visit CompTIA to learn more about the tests and study requirements. CompTIA creates and administers the tests. You'll also find information and links about study materials there.

Before you invest any money, though, I would double-check whether A+ and Net+ certifications alone will win you a job at Minolta. If you didn't get that information from a HR rep at Minolta, it's time to call Minolta's HR department or send an inquiry via e-mail.
