Earn and Learn

Posted by : Molly Joss

Dear Molly: My son, 25, has recently shown interest in the computer field. He finally realizes there are abundant opportunities available, but we don't know where to start. What would you recommend for certification or technical training for someone who is unable to commit to a two/four year college program because of financial reasons. He needs to earn as he learns. He has expressed interest in e-mail administration and computer security.

Molly says: One of the least expensive certifications is the A+ certification from CompTIA, and he can study for that one on his own. While he's doing that, it's worth trying to get him some aptitude testing so he can see if he wants to work alone or with others, and what his personality type is. I would recommend this prep work before launching into any computer career. If he needs to earn while he learns, then perhaps he can get a job doing data entry while he works out the rest of the program. That way he'd be around computers, working at a good firm that might have a tuition reimbursement program and doing a little self-research before narrowing his choices in IT careers.
