Earning an A+

Posted by : Molly Joss

Dear Molly: I am thinking of a career change and am thinking about getting an A+ certification. How viable is it in today's IT job market?

Molly says: The A+ certification from the CompTIA organization is one of the least expensive and easiest certifications you can get in IT. You don't need any formal training, and the cost of the exam is less than a few hundred dollars.

As to how viable it is, CompTIA says more than a quarter of a million people have earned an A+ certification. It's one of the most commonly requested certifications in the business world, according to a recent article in Computer Reseller News--based on the publication's own research.

Bottom line, though, is that it's not viable unless you can get a job locally. Take a look in the want ads in your local area. See how many ask for the certification. If you're computer savvy, take the exam and see if you can pass. It won't cost you a lot and you can then go job hunting in the local area without giving up the job you have now.

For more information on the A+ certification and others CompTIA offers, visit the organization's Web site (http://www.comptia.org).
