Dear Molly: Where could I find out what the hot entry level IT skills are for New York City? I tried looking through the newspaper, but it's mostly agencies and ads for experienced people.

Molly says: To help answer your question, I went to the job-search section of Headhunter Net and searched for entry-level IT jobs in the New York City area. More than 25 popped up, covering a wide range of skills, and most required less than a year of experience.

There were some programming jobs, some e-commerce-related jobs and even instructor and recruiter jobs. One of the more interesting jobs was tied to a love of sports with other requirements included programming skills, especially "in Perl (at least one year of experience in Unix programming). Relational database skills (at least 1 year of experience with MySQL or other relational database package). You must also be a North American sports fan (baseball, basketball, football, hockey…). Salary between 50K and 75K based upon experience. The right candidate for this position must love major league sports."

I don't know whether you love sports, but I included this job description to point out the fact that IT jobs are diverse in many respects and you must plan your career--not just get some training in a hot job area. It also helps to get a job that's related to something you love.
