4/19/01Ask Molly8_7.xmlby Molly JossTitle: I'll have the MBA with a side of IT Blurb: An MBA student should consider minoring in computers and pursuing a finance-related internship.

Dear Molly: I'm a sophomore in college and am working on a degree in business. I know I want to get an MBA because I'm interested in a career in investments--maybe even running my own investment company. But I'm really interested in computers, too. Is there any way I can combine my interest in business and finance with computers?

Molly says: There are a couple of ways you can indulge your desire to work with money and computers at the same time. Computers are used as tools in the investment world to help track investments, so you need to become a spreadsheet guru. Knowing how to research companies via the Web is another skill you would find valuable. Also, take as many computer courses as you can--you might want to consider pursuing a computer-related minor.

As you progress through your education, you might find that you want to develop computerized financial models, or that you want to help companies design their financial reporting systems. With an educational foundation in finance and computers, you could easily mix your two passions into a satisfying career.

You sound like an ideal candidate for a summer internship that would help you get to know more about how computers are used in the investment world.
