Dear Molly: I live in the Atlanta area and I want to get into the IT field. I have already taken classes in A+ and Net+. I have taken the A+ core exam and will be taking the DOS/Windows exam next week. However, I feel I need some hands-on experience in help-desk and technical support and wondered if there are any unpaid (or paid) internship programs out there. If there are, let me know how I can join one.

Molly says: I have mentioned several Web sites where you can find internships in the last few weeks of this column, so be sure to look for those entries while you're online. I went to a few Web sites searching for the kind of internships you're looking for in the Atlanta area and found some possibilities. I visited these sites: http://www.4laborsoflove.org, http://www.idealist.org and http://www.friendsofvista.org. Vista, in case you were not aware, is Volunteers in Service to America. I chose that site because an unpaid internship can also be called a volunteer job.

I found a few internships that mentioned computers, but many more that involved working with children and teens and some that involved general office scut work. I would suggest that you go through the internships looking for the kind of company or organization you'd like to get involved with and then write to those companies to offer your IT skills.
