Education and Certificates

Dear Molly: I'm interested in taking some certification programs for A+, MCP, and CISCO. With the vast number of places to take these programs, can you provide the top seven places in Chicago that have good instructors, plenty of hands-on training and possibly job placement upon passing the certification exams? Your advice will be highly appreciated.

Molly says: You didn't tell me what your current day job is or what your major in college was. Unless the two are IT related, just obtaining the certifications isn't going to do you much good. I'm hearing, almost on a daily basis, from people who have completed the certifications you've mentioned and are unable to find jobs that use the training they spent so much time and money getting.

If you like your current job, but would like to make more money or eventually change over to an all-IT position, see what IT-related positions are available within your own company. Find out what kind of training and experience you need to get one of these jobs. Since the company already hired you for one job, it should be predisposed to hire you for something IT-related if you qualify.

That said, I don't recommend one training school over another. You're going to have to do some leg work and check out these places yourself.
