Software and games have their place, but there's nothing like a good utility to make you feel like you have control of your computer, bending it to your will rather than dully clicking around someone else's default settings. Even something minor, like changing the path to a print monitor, can make you feel like a commander. So go ahead, tinker at will.

Insider Software has released FontAgent Pro 1.0.2, an update to its font utility. New for Jaguar, the utility optimizes font performance and offers repair abilities that eliminate corrupt fonts, unnecessary point sizes, and duplicate fonts. Added features include a new uninstaller that removes all FontAgent Pro files, a way to automatically save the last point size specified in the font viewer, and a removal of limits on the number of fonts, sets, or libraries that can be exported. The $99 utility requires OS X version 10.2, and can be downloaded from the company's Web site.

Printer shortcut fanatics, take note. Shareware developer Steve Becker has put out iPrint for Mac OS X. The utility lets the user have control over printing from most applications that allow for print selection. It also accelerates printing, tackles common browser printing difficulties, and can be accessed via a keyboard shortcut. Working in the background, iPrint supports multistyled text as well as colored text and has been optimized to work with AOL Instant Messenger and iChat. ...
